I don't have anything against vinyl tops, just take the precautions mentioned by others and it will be fine. I have seen too many cars where someone along the way pulls the vinyl off without removing the glass, then repaints it as a hard top and the car eats itself.

70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

I like the vinyl tops. Mine came with one and will get a new one when finished. I think it sets the cars apart from the rest of the pack and makes them more unique. Just treat it like your baby and it will look great.

My opinion:

1) I think vinyl tops are ugly on E-bodies. Like said before, it breaks up the flow of the car. I don't really like vinyl on any car, for that matter. I'm also 26, so maybe I'm too young to like it....

2) I wouldn't want it for the rust factor. Even with paint under it, I would still worry about rust.

Just my opnions.

unless it's garaged in climate controlled storage with minimal humidity in the air, the  condensation, will cause corrosion, that forms under the vinyl from temperature changes ,the moisture gets trapped and takes a very long time to evaporate, causing cancer

These days these cars are NOT set outside 24 hrs a day 365 days a year in all kinds of weather. If you're like most people it will be pampered the rest of it's life which will be longer than you if the work is done right. I personally like them and put one on the RR which didn't have one. It is fully painted under it. It's been wet maby twice in the past 4-5 years. When I wash the car I don't spray the top. If you take care of the car it will not be anything to worry about.  :2cents:

so far not much, besides the fully built 2JZ buttoned up this week, the chrome GT47-88 should be here Tuesday from Precision, the car is still in one piece, with interior, motor and all, trying to set up a good working area for it for the winter at the shop, and scrape up some  :money: ,as it won't be cheap,so I can tear it down, cut roof, floors, quarters off ,get it blasted and then we'll proceed with alot of custom metal work, I'll be sure to make a thread on the build, I'm kinda scared though, :roflsmiley:, some mopar heads might want to kill me, :stirpot:

mine has the original top with a little rot in 2 spots and I'm leaving it.it has'nt spread in 25 years so I figure the cancer will get me before my car.

If I prefer a non vinyl topped car it is mostly because of the rot potential. I like the look of them. Maybe its just me but I dont have a problem seeing the bodyline with a vinyl top on the car  :dunno:  My car had one and it will again. It had stripes and it will again. Just trying to stick with the original color scheme. To each his/her own I say. The one thing that made me not want to go back with one is the cost of it plus the pia of finding good moldings and then the hassle of paying someone to install it. A good benefit of living here is the low level of rust cars in this area have and the fact that it will be painted just like a hardtop. It will be scuffed but other than that it will have the benefit of the same layers of paint that the rest of the car will get. I barely had any problems with rust on this car and that contributed to the re-installation choice. Here is a pic of the backlight channel, the windshield channel looked the same.
