I've found 2 shops to do the body and paint work for my car. Shop 1 dosent have a paint booth (older shop). Shop 2 has paint booth along with baking ability.

Question is, how important is it to bake the primer and the paint?

I think the paint booth is really important too! reflections can probably tackle this question easily!

From remembering what Rev went thru, the paint booth would keep contaminants out of the paint. It's more about having a clean work place than anything. Just curious, but was there a difference in price on the paint jobs?

Like reflections I paint cars in my garage but it is not the best setup.Having a good paint booth,even a homemade one, to keep the job sealed off from the rest of the shop to keep dirt and contaminants out is what you want.You can get a nice job without one, it just means wetsanding and buffing any dirt out which a lot of shops do anyway.

I work as a painter in a restoration shop in Salt Lake City.I have been in the bussiness for 20 years now and have painted cars in my garage when I first started.A paint booth is very important!With out a paint booth you can encounter many problems.Sure there are many people that will tell you that it is easy to set up your garage as a make shift booth.But you will be asking for more work than you thought it would be.Spraying in a down draft booth with heat is the only way to go!Air flow in a booth is very important!It is just one of the factors which will affect the finish.There are many other factors involved.If you have any more questions about it e mail me at berna4406@yahoo.com
Also think of it this way.If you have your car ready to spray(in the booth masked up and cleaned)if it is a 2 stage system it will take roughly 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours to spray a complete.After your last coat let it flash for 15 minutes then bake it for 30 minutes at 160 degree's
Let it cool down for 20 minutes take of your masking paper and you can drive the car home!If he is a good painter doing what he is suppose to do then he can lay down a paint job that will not have to be color sanded and buffed out.Its worth the price to have a car done in a down draft heated booth.

I figured it would keep dust out of the paint. The baking of the paint to get it to harden faster, makes sense to go that route. Thanks for the info berna4406.

Don't know exactly the price difference, usually get an open ended quote, so the price can go up anyway.

I was surprised that shop1 didn�t use a booth.
