Best fix for a body line?
« on: November 28, 2008 - 07:45:56 PM »
I'm doing as much of the body work as I can on my latest project  and 4" from the bottom of the door there is a body line, about 1/2 of a drop off ( '70 Superbee ) . the car has no rust which is typical for my area so it doesn't need a new lower door skin for rust but since about 15" of this body line is wiped out am I better to replace the part of the bottom of the door with a patch panel which is cheap and easy to get or keep pounding on it? I'm a good welder and have done lower rear 1/4 patches before but I'm not sure what a body man would do in this one. I'm not sure I can fix this line but I suppose the shop that's going to paint it can, not sure about cost though.

is it a dent or what?  depends how bad it is, if it can be pulled/hammered out and filled.  do you have any pictures?  I'd say patching a piece in would be last resort, that'd turn into a mess.

I'll try to get a picture, it's hammered out pretty well but the line is washed out, you can get a dolly behind it somewhat but I don't think putting 15" of a sharp line is going to get done short of making it out of bondo. I haven't had much luck at that but I know it can be done.

put a straight edge across where the line is low, if it's within an eighth of an inch, you're fine.  filler is just fine if it's used properly.  It sounds like that's your best bet without seeing it.

I'd drill access hole in a door jamb and use a paintless dent removal tool or simillar home made pick to push out the line, just run a tape line to make it easier, or use stud welding gun and pins to pull that area out,I  try to work stuff like that so there is minimal filler on the car
