I'M very POed
« on: December 17, 2008 - 01:05:31 PM »
I just talked to my insurance co about my truck. The lady said it looked like it may be a total. I said just from a fender, bumper and grill. She informed me that if they total it they may not let me keep an unsafe car. I exploded on her and told I don't care if they call it a total or not I'm keeping the truck.  So now we will have to wait to se what her market value comes up with. I did one of my own and I'm getting myself set for a fight to the finish. My blood pressure must have went up to the top cause just thinking about it gets me steamed all over. I'd like to say I feel better now but I don't!

Take care of yourself.  I have a blood pressure problem myself.  It will all work out I am sure.  I wish you the best of luck and stay as calm as can think about something else that helps me for sure.  Gordon
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I can't BELIEVE they'd total a truck over that...  These people know NOTHING about automobiles...

I'm really sorry to hear that.  Best of luck!!

Its just simple math, x amount of dollars for repair versus y amount of value for a vehicle. Replacement parts and shop labor are expensive. Values are low.

The statement about not allowing you to keep it is a little different to me as most places will let you buy back the totalled vehicle, but it may get a salvage title attached to it from then on depending on how they process it, which could be a negative impact if you want to sellor trade it in the future.

:iagree:  You have some emotional connection to the truck.  For them, it's just a business decision.  I don't know if it's possible, but you may see if you can withdraw the claim and fix it yourself.  This will avoid the salvage title and allow you to keep the truck.

I'm on cloud nine right now.      :bananasmi     After arguing with the insurance co. they finally agreed to fix it. I'm having the body shop put on a 2001 Sport front on my 98 Sport.  :woohoo:   They said the parts price differance was less than $200.00 and it dosn't matter to them which one they put on. I'll have to pay the differance but it's way cheaper than finding another truck and start over.

The first pic is my 98 front. The second is the 2001 style front. I'm also putting these head light on at the same tine with SilverStar Ultra. A big improvement I think!!

Thanks for the support guys!!! I needed it today.

That's good to hear.  It's crazy to know what some insurance companies consider a totaled vehicle...(sister works for Progressive in Madison)  On the other spectrum, it's crazy how much they quote some of the POS's that are on the roadways...My old '91 Corolla with 247,500 miles (and a lot of WI rust) still had an insurance value of ~$1,200-$1,500...:screwy:

I'm managing a panel shop at the moment here in Australia, the major insurance companies here at the moment are doing everything to not write cars off. Because the market is depressed and the write off is not selling at the auctions for very much and scrape steel prices are way down too. It costs them extra money and they certainly don't like spending that stuff.   :money:
We have had 3 technical right offs in our shop in the last month and the insurance companies paid to have them fixed. Unfortunatley we have 2 more sitting in the shop which will be written off but only because we cannot get second hand parts and new ones are way too expensive. Both will be good cars for a panel beater to fix in their own time and are still structurely sound.
