Am I screwed???
« on: November 29, 2008 - 11:31:13 AM »
I want to get a set of ralley wheels for my Cuda but the only problem is that it has heavy duty rear axles with huge 5/8 in studs! The Welds are hubcentric and if I remember correctly the ralley wheels are lug-centric. I also see a problem with the lug nuts clearing the center caps. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

they can get tight But as long as you can get a lug with a 13/16 socket size for the 5/8" studs you will be ok

The other problem I see is that the studs have a smooth shank area at the base and even with the welds there is a 1/2 solid washer between the wheel and nut.

What you are describing sounds like a screw in aftermarket stud. Can you look behind the axle flange to see if the studs screw in or press in? Some aftermarket axles have provisions for screw in, 5/8 lug studs to eliminate the mag wheel lug nut that centers the wheel on the nut. These style of studs are a true stud that centers the wheel on the stud then uses a large washer and nut to retain the wheel to the studs. Actually a much better, and stronger, arrangement than traditional mag lug nuts. The problem you will have is these style of studs are designed for thick, lightweight, competition wheels. Stock style rallyes use small acorn style lug nuts and are thin pressed steel that do not have as much contact area on the lug nut as the competition style you have. Basically, as you noticed, stock wheels are incompatible with competition studs like you have. What you may be able to do is see if you can identify the axle manufacturer, call them and see if they have the correct stud style for the mounting the stock rallyes.  This also means if you ever want to put yout lightweight wheels back on, you will need either to change the studs, or will need to buy all new lug nuts to be compatible with the new studs.

This is off subject, and I don't mean to offend................That car is sooooo good looking, but the wheels just don't do the 72 justice!
PLEASE post a few pictures when you get the Rally's on that fine looking ride. That thing will look twice as nice with new wheels!!!!!!
That is a GREAT car!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe you could find someone building a drag or "pro street" car that would like the wheels & axles to purchase or trade.

I, personally, would leave the car the way it is. It looks great. It has less unsprung weight with the Welds and technically the car is safer the way it is set up. Although on the street you most likely will never need the added safety.

Take your axles to a machine shop and they can drill you 5 holes for the stock studs. That way, if you ever want to go back to your Welds, you just tap the small ones back out and screw the big ones back in. A "GOOD" machine shop will get them pefectly centered and wont charge a lot of $.

I had Pinto suspension and brakes on the front of my Daytona race car. A machine shop was able to drill my 4 on 4" hub and rotor to a 5 on 4.5" Mopar pattern in a couple of hours.

'72-'74 Rallyes are kinda boring looking IMHO.  YOu car looks great as-is, plus the heavy steel wheels will rob HP.

O/T I know, but my $0.02.
