« on: November 30, 2008 - 08:46:36 AM »
Ok guys and gals, I got this from Moparts.com, I dont normaly cross post or poach topics if you will but this is a safety issue and I thought it important enough to break my own rule.

http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4826897

This may not be news to some but I would be willing to guess that it is to most.

Thank you Mopar Man at Moparts for posting this.

i was aware of this problem as i know alot of people in the tire biz, that being said, it is important for people that store there cars for long periods of time and dont drive them that much ,the tires can look new and have a hidden "dry rot".
it only make sense the warehouses i have seen they have thousands of tires, and cant possibly sell all those tires in one year let alone 3 or 4 years! this has been happening a long time! from the looks of it!

I had this happen to me couple of years ago.  Was traveling 70 mph on I65 crossing the Tennessee river 2 mile long bridge when the front left failed.  Steel belt whipped around and beat up the fender before getting wrapped around the suspension.  When it locked up I swerved into the left lane, got control, and skidded off to the side.  There was a huge shower of sparks at night with the top down.  The tire was 8 years old.

There was a nice discussion about this topic when this story broke this summer on a Mustang board I frequent. I think most of the posters felt this video was typical journalism gone bad. The condition of the tire is far more important than the age.

Here's a link if anyone cares to read the discussion:
