question about flip top gas cap and trim ring

My dad just got a Mopar restoration (repro) flip top gas cap and trim ring for our 70 chally vert.  The problem is that with the cap flush against the quarter panel, there is play in the trim ring and the trim ring is not tight against the panel or the cap.  Is there supposed to be some kind of gasket between the two?  Pictures of originals or ones on your cars would be helpful.

That was the problem we ran into which is why we had a patch panel from an original quarter panel put in so the flip top would work.  Now the issue is that the cap will mount fine but the trim ring is not snug, it is just loose on the body.

Just called the body shop and let them know about possibly bending the tangs on the trim ring part.  They said if that does not work, they could use some bicycle tube type material for a gasket to get it snugged up between the trim ring and the cap.  They also said that when you hold the trim ring up snug against the cap and flip the cap open all the way (as if you were gassing up the car) the cap was pushing on the trim ring.  Building up the area with a gasket between the trim ring where it meets the cap should raise the over all height of the cap allowing it for more clearance for the cap to be flipped open and not hit the trim ring.

I remember original carswith the flip top having a gasket.  It looked like the carb to aircleaner gasket. I think it's purpose was to keep the ring from cutting into the paint and causing rust.

Just bent the tangs as mentioned, no rubbing afaikt.
