What exactly does pro- touring mean?

I saw a ad in a auto trader magazine yesterday for a pro-touring 1970 Challenger. Just what exactly does pro-touring mean in relation to a description for a car? Thanks

It means OVERPRICED custom car that was done to the owners specs , and now he cant sell it because nobody else wants it that way

The original premise behind pro-touring about 10-12 years ago is that the car was built to accelerate, brake, and corner all equally as well or better than a late model car. Inside the car had changes like sound insulation, stereo/navigation equipment and improved seating were the norm. Other mods like efi, overdrive, and optimized suspension set up were also to be expected. There were destined to be driven hard on a regular basis.

Over the years however, pro-touring has come to mean any car with 18" diameter wheels with low profile tires.

The XV Motorsports Stage 2 cars they build would be a good example of a pro touring car. Increased braking capability, fuel injection, upgraded suspension, more horsepower, nice stereo, functional seats. Plus sized wheels with low profile tires to accomodate larger brakes, and sometimes an aero package.

Well put.    Often times it just means bigger wheels.

Bare minimum:

- 17" wheel/tires

- front disc brakes

- front sway bar


This would be considered a "starter" pro-touring car.

Next items to bring it up a level:

- rear sway bar

- rear disc brakes

- OD trans.

- rast ratio steering box


Next upgrade:

- EFI

- Rack and pinion front suspension

- lightweight engine components (al. heads, intake, master cylinder)



Convenience items are nice and bring it up to modern cars, but not sure if they necessarily make it more "pro-touring":

- AC

- PW

- tilt wheel

- cruise

- modern seats

- full gauges
