NEED HELP!!!!
« on: December 14, 2008 - 05:01:01 PM »
Does anyone here have any experience setting up a DVR system to be viewed over the internet?  We hooked up a camera system at the kennel and are supposed to be able to hook it up so it can be view while at home.  We have run into some problems...   :pullinghair:  :pullinghair:  :pullinghair:

Not sure April, wish I could help. The manual no good? Maybe try a Google search. Sounds like it could be some frequency problem as it's obviously wireless. Can you tune the screen/TV at home manually (+/-).  :dunno:

We have cameras hard wired to a DVR which runs through our router.  My ISP blocks Port 80, which is the default setting on the DVR, but the tech support from the company we got the camera system from says that we can use any port from 81-89 to avoid having to upgrade our ISP service, so I am not sure that is the problem either.  As of now it is on Port 89 and I can access it through my LAN at work but I can't see it from home.

The manual says to open a DNS account at DynDns.com (The purpose of the DNS is so you type in a host name rather than the IP address to access it).  From my LAN, when I type in the host name, it works and the camera views come up, when outside of my LAN (home, etc.), we don't get anything.

The ports on the DVR match the ports forwarded on the router.  The DNS is tied into the router, as well as the DVR.  I'm kind of at a loss here for over a week.  The computer guy I called in to help cancelled on me twice.  We have been going crazy for over a week now with this!

April,
I hacked into your system, I only got one quick image, but I was able to save it for you.

I also heard one of them bark out "Bring more beer", just so you know.  ;)

Have you tried to connect using your internet ip instead of your domain? Does your computer at home have a firewall? Your sure the router at the kennel is forwarding port 81 to the camera's IP? I don't think your domain should be tied to the DVR??

We have tried connecting with the internet ip instead of the domain with the same results.

Yes my computer at home has a firewall.

We are sure about the router is forwarding to the right port.

What I found out today is that my DVR didn't set port 81 when I rebooted it the first time.  When I rebooted it again it did set it.  Now I can access the page I am looking for where video should be displayed, but I can't see what the cameras see, and it is reporting errors. So, we got one step closer but not quite there yet.

What should be tied to the DVR if not the hostname?  You can't access the DVR without a user name and password anyway, if it is a security issue you are referring to.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help!

The router should forward the port to your DVRs ip address. Have you tried turning your personal PCs firewall off? It could be blocking port 81.

Are you saying you can now access the page on your home computer but can't watch the video?

I agree the firewall could be messing with things! I can't even access the internet with all the updates and MY firewall up!!
