StRoKerS How To : Rocker Install
« on: June 17, 2008 - 10:06:34 PM »
Ive been wanting to do this stuff for awhile to help out oher members so here we go!!!  Mods put this in the proper area......  :2thumbs:

This is Roller rocker Install on a 440/500 WEDGE  :working:

Getting Started
Put your assembley together make sure to use the proper assembly lube on the bearings...... some people like to soak them in oil... the rockers are marked with R and a L they need to be put on correctly...

First rocker the whole way to the left is an L and right next to it is a R -see the difference in where the adjuster nuts are and install the same the whole
way down with the big spacers provided with your kit!!! this is to get the pushrods in the rocker adjuster screw correctly!

1st
We are going to check for correct pushrod length... I use the comp cams adjustable pushrod checker... each revolution is .050 and marked wth lines and easy to use...
Once the rockers are setup properly put the adj. pushrod checker in the 1 piston hole and then roll the rockers onto the head!

2nd
Carefully Tighten down the assembly only one at a time and doing a little at a time back and forth... The reason being some of the rockers will compress on the springs and creating pressure and could cause the shaft to break!!!

3rd
Once all done put a feeler guage in between the rocker tip and the spring.. use the correct lash setting per cam specs!

Now no more than 3 threads should be showing out of the bottom of the rocker... spin the pushrod checker up until it meets the bottom of the ball on the adj. screw. take the assembly off and pull the checker carefully and see how many revolutions you made.... the checker is .800 long to start and every turn is .050....... call you push rod mfg. and give them these specs!

4th
Once you have the correct length push rods put them all down into the heads and re-assemble the rocker assembly as stated above!
You can see why doing a little tightening down back and forth comes into play here so once things start to compress you can feed the pushrods into the rocker adj. screws.

5th
Once all tightened down we need to check side to side clearance... again get out the feeler guage... I like to run .020 side to side clearance with aluminum heads. combos will vary........

If too much side to side clearance which is likely use .015 shims... use as many shims as it takes to get to about .020 and also determining which side to put the shims on is key for getting the rocker tip right over the valve stem so place accordingly! this is key!!!
You may have to take the assembly off and on several times to get it all squared/shimmed up properly!

6th
Once all set its time to set the valves and you need a Lash Card

This is very simple to use... Start at TDC and do the Intake and Exhaust valve the chart tells you... We will do #1 exhaust as an example...
These are tools you can use to tighten it all up....

Place the feeler guage in between the rocker tip and valve stem tip and tighten down...

Now when tightening down you spin the adj. screw down until it gets tight and then hold it tight with the T Handle shown and use the wrench shown to lock it down now once you feel the adj. nut get tight hold the T Handle firm and turn the wrench about an 1/8" snug... thats it as it will tighten up under load... too tight will break the adj. screw under driving conditions... you will need to get a feel for this...
Once its good an "snug" run your feeler gauge side to side in between the valve stem tip and rocker and there should be some tension. I like side to side on rollers cause front to front rolling on the roller can trick you into feeling
its good but its not the proper tension... you will get a feel for this also...

Now rotate crank 90* after setting each intake/exhaust as per lash card until you get all valves done...

Example of intake side and exhaust side.. The exhaust side is obviously on the header side and intake is on intake manifold side...

oh yea!!! when tightening down the rocker shafts I torque them to 25lbs  :2thumbs:

This is the way I do it and it works great or me!!! Maybe more members will jump onto the HOW TO section !!!

Good post Stroker!  :ylsuper:  :2thumbs:

I made a Word document of it, and hosted it at...  ..er, ahem... ...fileUPYOURS for the convenience of other members who may want to have a copy of it on their own computer:

Thx guys its something Ive been wanting to do for awhile on installs.... I did it late last night  :faint:

Also on a side not once all is buttoned up and fire up the engine and bring to temp and reset the valves.... cam mfg's valve lash setting is done HOT ......  :2thumbs: The cylinders on the drivers side in order from front of car to firewall are 1-3-5-7
and passenger side is obviously 2-4-6-8   :working:

FYI .... Cold lashing tricks some use.......

Iron Block Iron Heads Add .002" lash
Iron Block Aluminum Heads Subtract .006" lash
Aluminum Block Aluminum Heads Subtract .012" lash

Aluminum Block Aluminum Heads Subtract .012"
example:
.029 - .012 = .017 cold lash

Does this look like enough clearance? The cup doesn't bind.  Looks like it'll be OK.

it should work but without full thread contact it is weaker then it could be , how much spring pressure are you running?

Im more worried about his head gasket thickness.... which would help .. but I am 10.92 to 1 compression with the same cc heads and mine are aluminum....   :working:

his heads are 83.5 cc's   906's

He is supposed to get back with some data.........  :chatting:

You also have to watch out for the cup end of the pushrod contacting the rocker itself at full lift....
