Tell me if I'm nuts to even think about this, or should I take the chance and have some illegal do it. Do I even need to worry about it if there are no leaks?

Putting new seals in is all you can do...no leak no problem from what I can tell.

Re building a complete unit from start to finish looks to be a major task.
Just doing seals wouldn't be hard to do.

I rebuilt a few of those.......back in the early 80's, not a lot to it or to doin it but of your not leaking fluid, your just as well off cleanin it and putting it back on.
