Coil Question

Hello,
   Got my new intake (4brl) in my 318. Runs great. But I wanted to replace the coil. I have a pretty much stock motor. Other then the new edelbrock carb and stock cast iron 360 intake.
   Be nice it was a freebie and seems to work great.
   I wanted to know, keeping in mind I have stock electronic ign. Can I just put on a performance coil. Or will that be to much for the old system? Will I see any differance over the old stock coil?

   I went a little big on the carb and it is running rich. I was going to jet it down, but I was told it will be good once I get on the duel exhaust. I am running a 600 cfm. Runs amazing but rich.

The High output coil will work & help with your ign as is
where does it run rich , idle or cruising , jetting only affects cruise & full throttle idle could be float level too high or mixture screw not adjusted correctly

I was told he put the idel mixture screws all the in and the car continued to run at idle. it also smells rich while driving.

Air vacuum leak somewhere. It is getting air in another location

you may have an internal fuel leak through the power valve or the gasket between the body & metering block
the mixture screws on most turn in to lean the mix & it should stall if they are all the way in typically they should be 1-1.5 turns out , ifi you had an air leak you would  be lean you have to have an internal fuel leak , I assume the carb is not new

  Definetly in the carb, check needle and seat not sealing or float level too high. You said it was a 2nd hand carby maybe somebody played around before with it or even the floats are sinking soaking up fuel,   :2cents:

No it is a brand new edelbrock out of the box. From my shop. I will check with him again to make sure that was a correct statement. I just got it back yesterday and have not had any time to play with it. (Due to work)

But if that coil will help and not hurt the system then I will get one. THANKS!!

If it smells rich all the time, it could be rich. What do the plugs look like? As for a coil, i stay far away from Accel, I do use a lot of MSD Blasters with good results. In most cases, Edelbrocks come lean. But with a stock 318, it can run rich. You need the strip kit for it and a vacuum gage to properly tune the carb. I'd bet it needs a different set of step up springs and probably a smaller jet and rod combination to be perfect.

Maybe you aren't running on the idle circuit and are a little bit into the primaries.
