Where to find trunk lock for post '72 Cuda???
« on: January 21, 2009 - 04:48:59 PM »
I'm having fits trying to find the right trunk lock for my Cuda. The car is a '73 but the tailpanel came from an unknown doner Barracuda. The location of the lock hole is offset to the passenger side of the tail panel as it should be. I have a lock with a "round" body but a tail panel hole that is smaller than the lock body and has 4 slots at 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock. I ordered a lock that looked like the lock body would fit the slots, but the body is small for the hole and it has a flat metal piece that extends straight out - designed for a latch directly behind the lock:

Lock with slots in body (for a '72 Cuda?)

Similar lock with round body that is too big for hole in tail panel (for a '73 Cuda?)

Anyone know what lock I need and where to get it? Thanks in advance!

OK...so I'm responding to myself.  :eek7:

Looks like the AMD repop tail panels distinguish between the "small" trunk lock hole for the '72 Barracuda and the larger trunk lock holes on the '73/74 Barracudas. My tail panel certainly has the "smaller" lock hole. I have the '72 lock from Rock Auto which looks like this:

The lock seems small for the hole and it does not have the right angle "lever" at the end to activate the rod that extends to the trunk latch. Any idea where to find the right lock???? I suppose I could just file the hole larger so the '73 lock I have would fit but I'm not sure that would look right...

Thanks in advance!

I may be wrong, but those locks look like they are for a Challenger. Your lock should have a right angle piece with a hole in it for the lock rod to go in to. The lock assembly that I purchased from year One for my wife's 73 Cuda was Part # AY999.  It worked perfectly.

Looks like this.

1971 Cuda Drag Car
1973 Cuda Clone, EFI/OD Limelight
1970 Superbird (Yes, it's real) Black Ice
1971 Barracuda Sassy Grass Green (sold)
1970 Challenger RT SE 383 Plum Crazy
1969 Road Runner Hardtop
1968 Road Runner Coupe (sold)

I work at a parts store in my home town (Advance Auto Parts) and  ordered a trunk lock cylinder for my car and it was competely wrong.  Every parts store I went to in town had the same old thing.....  I ended up ording mine from year one and it was in and working in about 5 minutes.

Thanks for the help guys!
Now I have the correct one on the way. The parts-house lock will make a nice paperweight.
