Rocker Shaft Wear?
« on: February 11, 2009 - 11:16:53 AM »
How much wear is required before you replace rocker shafts? the ones I have show a little wear , you can see real light wear lines but can hardly feel it. they aren't that spendy but I don't want to replace them if they're ok, these are for steel Crane rockers not anything with bearings.

They sound way better than ones I have run.

Sounds like they are fine. The ones I have are loose and have become oval.

Do you have a stock oil pump and have you seen a decrease in oil pressure on the guage?  It may be nothing, but If I built an engine and found a worn part, I would change it out. Higher lift cams and spring pressures can make the shaft bend. I have had shafts break before. I try to stay with hardend shafts now. If it's thinner, it will flex more and can cause unstabil valve train problems.  A mild build I dont see a problem tho. Do not over tq the hold down bolts tho. Disaster can and will bite you

the new shafts are only $75 for a pair , I doubt you would see any drop in oil pressure as the shafts are only pulse fed , if you cannot feel the grooves take some fine emery cloth polish them & use them again
