paint over undercoat?

Bottom is being undercoated,and thinking of painting body color overtop.Leaning towards leaving it black,but wondering if anyone has any thoughts or pictures of theirs.Would the paint chip easier?

you need to make sure that the undercoating is paintable,if it is,and if it's old,I'd spray some adheson promoter before paint,best would be a etching primer,ig the undercoating is non-paintable,it will bleed thru and will make the paint look dirty,and you will be risking having it crack and split,usually if it's paintable, it won't rub off and won't scratch easy,and it's pure black, the non-paintable(I don't even know why they make it and stingy people use it) is kerosene and asphalt mix that looks brown,scratches easily ,can be washed off by pressure washer and can be wiped off with gasoline

My painter advised to paint over the ubc...  I did and it works just fine... just make sure the coating is paintable... that`s not always the case.

The oildrum would be good to put the neighbor in after you beat him with the shovel too! I'm just sayin............

Just thought I'd add that if original look is of any concern to you, an undercoated car would be correct since this was a factory option (J55). However a painted car will have a smooth finish, which won't be the case if you paint over the undercoating. Just my $.02.

The fender tag has a J54,which is a hood insulating pad ,and the original sales sheet lists undercoating as an option.I live 50 miles from the city,so when i take it out on weekends,its a 100 mile trip for sure.I like the body color look,but think the i need the under coating for stone chips,etc.After looking at Dutches car,Im thinking combining the two looks pretty good.I welcome any opinions on this.

J54 is the sport hood option (as opposed to the shaker hood on some 'Cudas), J55 is the insulation pad and undercoating. There is of course the possibillity that the car was undercoated at the dealer. Anyways, the idea of additional protection sounds good to me. Here's a list of the codes for your reference:
