.80 Over 440 Pistons?

Can you go more than .60 over on a 440? I have a '70 block I just bought cheap that's date coded perfect for my project but it's bored .30 over now and I'm skeptical if it will clean up at .60 over. if .80 pistons are an option who makes them? and are there any draw backs? I'd like to use this block but not bad enough to create problems or big expenses.

Why not try to go .065 and not go that high over 60.

I dont believe .080 over is doable in any 440 block. But, for a bunch of extra money, you can sleeve whatever holes dont clean up. Even all 8 if necessary. Just make sure the shop you use is reputable.

I've been told a 440 had enough meat to go .80 over, maybe not. I guess I'll have it checked out and see if 60 or 65 will clean it up but I have my doubts.  If it was the original block I'd go to the expense of sleeves if they were needed but I don't think a date code block would be worth it.

I think by the time you go to the trouble and expense of sonic testing all the cylinder walls and then either sleeving the block or having custom pistons made, you'd be better off finding a rebuildable block.  I had to do that with mine.  My machine shop had one in storage and sold it to me for about $200.

I think you're right, I have a real nice virgin 11-71 cast date one I just like the 5-69 better. it might clean up in .30 yet though, it has enough ridge you can feel it and some real light rust pitting, I'll have it checked but I don't know.

Is it even possible to drive a typical engine so long that .30 over bore wont clear it up? I mean, that is lots of ridge. If the bore starts to be almost .30 over because of the wear I would assume that there are hardly any rings left (if original) and the blow by would be pretty hard?

I had something that felt like an huge ridge on my 383 (and considering the overall shape of the engine, it had seen a lots of miles) but it cleaned out easily with .30 overbore. Things get different if there are scratches or something else because of internal failure.

the block can be tested with a sonic tester & I have seen some blocks with .300 thick walls & the minimum is .125 on the thrust side so yes it could possibly be done & you can get a custom piston for not a whole lot more than a std replacement piston .
 It may not clean up due to rust & pitting not just ridge
