Paint or bedliner
« on: June 01, 2009 - 06:38:15 PM »
:feedback:  I posted this on my restoration thread, but didn't get any responses so I'll try here.  Won't be long and I'll be ready to apply some kind of finish to the bottom side/undercarriage of my 'Cuda.  I really like the cars I've seen on CC.Com that have the undercarriage painted the same color as the body and originally was going to do likewise.  However, I don't have access to a car rotisserie and don't want to pay a body/paint shop to do it.  Also, I was having second thougths on having it painted.  I think every time I drove over a rock, or through a puddle or got caught in the rain it would freek me out as to what it was doing to the paint.  So now I'm considering using a truck bed linning on the bottom of the floorboards, trunk pan, etc and just painting the frame rails.  For those who have painted your undercarraige, any regrets?  Same for those who have used bed linner?  Is there a better option(s)?  Would paint or bed linner make a difference in judging at a car show?  Any difference in the value of the car if I was every going to sell it as it is a matching numbers car that I'm going to restore to pure stock.
Like I said, your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Brad

IF undercoat is on there now, then you have to scrape it off and probably get it sanblasted. You could get it undercoated again in black. I scraped all the old undercaot off and then had it sandblasted, then I sprayed color tinted bedliner on the underside. It looks great

If it is going to be a driver, I would undercoat it.  That is what I plan on doing to mine.  You can also get the udercoating tinted to match you paint color.

There is a thread on here about undercoating that used the Raptor Brand coating, and he said it went on easy and looked great.

I just finished spraying my underside with Raptor liner. Peice of cake and i love it. Course my car is still on the rotisserie, but this raptor stuff is so painless my grandma could shoot it on (if she was around) . You just  simply pour some hardener in a quart bottle of the liner and shake for a couple minutes, then screw the bottle on the end of the spray gun that is provided with the kit. You basically get 4 bottles( quarts) in a box and a quart of hardener. 1 kit did the underside of my car and the trunk. I am going to buy another and do the outside firewalls to front fender areas and hit the bottom with the leftover. $110 bucks for the kit. I like it. I went with black, in case i decide to repaint the car in the future.

I think if your going to drive the car a lot and your not building a trailer queen the undercoat or spray on sound deadening products is the way to go.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.  :2thumbs:  I agree, I think the best way to go is using the bed linner on the undercarriage, especially since it's going to be a driver.  thanks again.

If you want the best results wash and degrease it and then scuff it as well.  :2thumbs:
