sending unit
« on: July 21, 2008 - 09:01:39 AM »
where is the best place to buy fuel sending unit for the 73 340 chally?

Can 1 person using a floor jack and some wood drop the tank and re-install by themselves?

The sending unit in my  chally finally shot craps and have to change it, but I don't have any help.

I got mine off Ebay from adealsap (I believe) for $50 last year, and have had no problems with it.  You can change it yourself, and do not need to drop the tank.  Just jack up the back end, take the rear tire off, and you can get it off with no problem.

Its not hard to do, but can get a little tricky.  I got my sending unit off of ebay and am still struggling to not get it to leak.  BTW, Advance Auto has them in stock.

make sure the fuel tank is below 1/2 full when you go to change it or you will get wet

the factory system to power the guages is a pulsing voltage so yes that is correct
there is a twist lock ring holding the sender into the tank , I suggest paying a few $$ more & buying a Sender form Dave at Roseville , the Spectra senders do not register accuratly in most cases

The ring holding the sending unit in has three tabs on it. I used a BIG flat blade screw driver and a hammer to loosen it. Remove the rear tire on the driver's side, and this won't be a big task at all.

4 raised tabs , I use a flat punch against the tabs , the lock ring has 3 locking tabs in the tank

I bought one from Dave at Roseville, going to put it in when the weather gets a little warmer.

You can do it with the tire on, its just much easier in terms of comfort.  You can reach and see the unit better with the tire off.  Especially, if its up on jack stands on your garage floor.

I think I will go the hard route and drop the tank, as it needs a good cleaning inside & out
