Space-saver spare tire
« on: February 11, 2009 - 10:14:12 PM »
I have to get a spare tire for my `70 383 SE and I was thinking of the space-saver ,for obvious reasons, but would it be hard on the rear-end,it is a sure-grip 355 gears, if I had to use it :clueless:      KEN    northern :canada:

I would think only if you ran it hard for quite a while it could be a problem. The rear end is designed to rotate at different speeds in corners though.

Anyone know how/when the clutches engage or the possibility of heat build up. :dunno:

My car came with one but I only use it for shows.  Can you buy replacement rubber for the rim and use it?  I can't imagine using the original just because I'd expect it to blow out on me. :dunno:

to my knowledge the space saver was designed to be the same height as the original , just narrower

Looking at the ones I have seen in some pics they seem alot smaller diameter than the stock tires :sadwavey:

After it is inflated?  Are you talking about the space savers used in newer cars or the one used origionally?

I know they made 14" space-savers, I'm not sure about 15".   :clueless: In any event, I'm sure the pictures you have seen are of the wheel de-flated... Thus saving space in the trunk.

Ya my car has 15" tires on it, so I wonder if one is made? :clueless: I would like to go with original but if new is better and safer then I guess that would be best. Does anyone know? :1zhelp:

The space savers are all 14".

I would not use one for a real spare, they are too expensive.

I think this part is more expensive than a steering wheel that has a rim horn.
