Best aircleaner on a 4bbl 383
« on: February 12, 2009 - 05:05:53 AM »
Hi guys,

i'm using these snowy days to upgrade a few things on my Chally, before taking her out on the streets again in spring. One of the things that bugged me since day one, is the super small aircleaner the preowner installed. I read in another thread that anything smaller than 14x3" affects power and mileage, so i definitely want to improve the air supply. Btw i've got functional scoops on my rallye-hood, sine the preowner also removed the covers underneath and now they are open.

Below you see pics of my current setup: 383 with Edelbrock performer RPM intake and AFB 750 4bbl carb. Or so i was told, as i personally can't tell the different carb/intake models apart from looks alone.

As far as i know, a K&N filter unit with open top (pic below) will provide the best air supply. Specifically i am looking at the KNN-66-3010 with 4.5" total height, or the KNN-66-3050 with 3.125" total height. Both are 14" diameter and should fit on my carb.

Now can anyone tell me if these will fit under my hood? (at least the smaller one)

Thanks for your feedback!

Just to make sure i'd like to check the hood clearance (from carb to hood-underside). Any ideas on an easy way to do this?  :clueless:

I had to buy the K&N filter with the drop-base to get it to fit.

A K&N will get you 10 horsepower, but a ram air box will get you 30+ hp. You get about a 1.5% power increase for every 10 degrees you cool the air to the carb. So on a 500 horse engine, if you lower your intake temp by 50 degrees, you pick up almost 40 horsepower.  Probably one of the best bang for the buck mods you can do! I have a set up on my 496 Cuda, using a 4 inch tall K&N filter. Playdough is good for checking clearance. I had to mil about 3/8 inch off the top of my M1 intake to get the clearance I needed.
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

Since your hoods inserts are off then why not the factory dual snorkal air cleaner w/ k&n in it?
