833 fourth gear
« on: February 19, 2009 - 09:28:07 PM »
Does anybody have a fine spline fourth gear they would like to sell? Mine has been injured by the PO who drove it without a pilot bushing. If I can get a good fourth gear I will swap it out, if not I will have it welded and re-turned. Anybody have one they don't need anymore? Thanks.

I don't believe so Al (as long as it is not the '75 and later OD). I thought the only difference was coarse or fine spline thru '74. Can anybody shed some light on this? :feedback:

I believe there are 2-3 different ones , I know for sure there were at least 5 different gear ratios available
Passon or Brewers would know for sure

CP I thought that was just for first thru third gears. Fourth gear should always be 1:1 shouldn't it? :dunno:  Unless like I said and it is from that OD trans. :dunno:

Passon, Brewers, You guys out there?

Are new gears available for the 833 like the Muncie?

The '71 up 'close ratio' with the 2.44 1st gear had a differnet input shaft the earlier transmissions.  Thats how they changed ratios for the close ratio, with an input/cluster gear swap.  The actual 1st, 2nd and 3rd mainshaft gears were the same.

I have not been able to find any info indicating that there are different fourth gears other than the coarse or fine spline. Here is a site I found that sells parts and kits. :dunno:

http://www.tbtrans.com/a833_4_speed_transmission_pa.htm

Anyway, the trans is # matching to my '70 A66 Challenger so it should be fine spline unless someone changed it.

The '70 and earlier drive pinion has 24 teeth,  '71  and later has 25.

Thanks Gears.

So if anybody has a 24 tooth drive pinion laying around, I'd be interested in it.

Mine matches also and it's a 23 spline. I just dealt with Brewers and they had a used 1-2 shift drum I needed. Maybe they have what you need also. :dunno:

You may have already got one but this is the guy I got my 4 spd parts from for the RR.

http://auctionworks.com/StoreFrontProfiles/default.aspx?sfid=92390

He was real easy to deal with and very helpful on the phone also. One page 5 he has listed the gear your looking for.
