70 R/T Grill
« on: March 08, 2009 - 01:44:45 PM »
Quick question....

I while ago i ran into the past owner of my R/T at a swap meet and he had a 70 R/T grill in the back of the pickup, he was selling it. I asked him where did that come from and he said it was the original off the car he sold me. Apparently he didn't like the original one and when he bought another R/T to swap the interior with he also swaped the grill. Anyways, I bought it and a couple of other mopar parts he had and hauled them home.
I can see the grill is just dirty and the one end where it mounts with a bolt is torn through the hole.
If I remember correctly, the egg crate look good.
The grill he put in my car looks good but I am NOT sure if there are any differances between R/T and non R/T grills that I need to check?
So should i have the original fixed and put back on the car or sell it?
WIW........ I may take it to Vegas with me..... And after I have my surgery I am unsure if the Doctor will let me go to Spring Fling....

Sorry no pictures at this time, I have it at my storage area......

Nick,

I can give you a real good idea of worth if you have a pic. The differance between the non R/T grill and R/T, is the non R/T grill is painted argent silver. The problem I have seen in the past, is many people re-paint the grills, but do so incorrectly. The inner 2 ribs around the center section should be bare aluminum, as should the inch or so wide lip around the front. It is common for the ends of these grills to get banged up, so that is a big factor in determining worth.

  Mike

EDIT: We could be talking anywhere from $300 if it has really been banged up on that one end, to maybe $600-700 if it is black, and painted correctly.   :2cents:

Here is a black R/T grill and an argent regular one. To restore one is a grand. There is a NOS argent one with bezels for 2500 on Mopartts. 600-1000 is the going price for a nice one

My eyes are not what they used to be so I better just post some pics of the grill in the car.
The black you see looks a little glossy
the egg crate looks grayish, sorry but as i said before, the eyes are not what they were.
Here are some pics

the center is never painted just natural alum
the best I can tell the grille is 80% flat with some but minimal gloss

so maybe the egg crate is correct because it looks unpainted and the black maybe a little too much glossy...
If that is the case i may be OK with leaving this on on the car and selling the other.

I will go the the storage area on Monday and get a picture of the original one including the damage.

Well I went and got the grill and took some pics of it and I think it looks really nice.
No broken egg crate area and the only problem is that twist and shear spot near the attaching hole but NOT at the hole itself.
I have marked the pictures where the shear is.

Please give me an idea of WIW and if it was you, would you fix the shear and put it back on the car since it is the original grill or just leave well enough alone and just sell it?

thanks Nick

Personally I would fix that one and put it back on, since it is the original grille.  Plus, since the one on the car is already in better shape, you will get more money for that one when you sell it.

My thought was the opposite.  If you were trying to return the car to factory-original, re-installing the original grille would be worthwhile.  But since the important numbers-matching stuff is all gone and the grille doesn't have a number on it anyway, there's no more importance attached to one grille versus another.

While you could probably get more money for the grille that's currently on the car, you'd have the hassle of changing out the grilles, plus you'd need to repair the original grille, so you'll lose the extra money in getting it fixed.  Unless you could do it yourself, in which case why not just fix it and sell that one?

Hey Nick
Keep the one thats in it,especialy if it fits good. You can always paint it any way you want.I have sold a few 70 Challenger grilles and they don't bring great money and that was when the economy was good, now that it's tanked :pullinghair:
I have a complete 70 Cuda grille minus the stainless trim and I am including the original header panel with it,it needs a couple of small repairs(I have extra sections included to fix)I can't get $800 for it,two years ago they would have been killing each other to buy it for that price.I know they repop them, not the header panel though.
Just my two cents
