Computer Question
« on: March 21, 2009 - 02:04:33 PM »
I am looking into buying a external hard drive. My dell has 250 gigs of memory but since I purchased my new digital camera and taking pictures like crazy I am filling up my computer. Any sugguestions on brand or size. I guess a 500gb should be fine.
Thanks for you help.

Pictures take a lot of memory.  You might want to check out the tera bit size because they are coming down in price.  I know I did not spell that right but just my  :2cents:

You can use a USB Flash Drive.  I thik my 8GB cost about 30 bucks.  I have about 1500 pics on a 4GB Flashdrive.

An external hard drive is the most economical way to go. A terra bite is great and the smartest route - you should have no issues after that.

I've used a Maxtor external hard drive OneTouch 4 Plus set up before.
It one day just stopped recognizing it.  :stomp:
I disassembled it  :horse:, and just tried to use the drive as a slave and I was back in business  :woo:
I had well over 40,000 pics on it too. I'm a digital camera freak :picture:
Just be aware if you buy a Maxtor external, that this is a very common issue,(read the maxtor forums).
Now all I do is use a 500 gig internal HD. Set it up as a slave along with my main hard drive.
All I have to do is drag and drop any info I want saved right to the slave.

Yea, with the prices always coming down so low, I'd just go for a 1 terabyte external  :2cents:
You'll probably NEVER run out of room with it

You might want to keep your pictures on two separate drives also. If your external fails you dont want to loose everything!

I have a my book too and a passport.  Both are great.  With the 500 gig units depending on size of pics you can get something like 150K pics or more. I have over 3k in pics and 8274 songs on my 500 gig and still lots of room left.  The passport is more portable though as it only uses usb power. I am big into gaming and upgrade my pc just about yearly and haveing a external drive is great for system backups as well.

Oh always chek out newegg.com for pc stuff prices before going to a store. You may find a way better deal.

I wouldn't buy a hard drive if it wasn't a Western Digital or a Seagate, personal preference and experience.  hard drives are so cheap now I would go with a 1TB drive.

I have 77,000 photos.  They are on my internal hard drive plus 2 seperate external drives (3 copies).  The externals are never powered up unless I'm using them.  That way they don't run forever and die or get infected with a virus.

Being a computer tech by trade, I'll give you some advice...
Never depend on any one piece of hardware to hold your data. Always store your data in more than one place. Like on a CD or DVD disk.

I have seen my share of failures in my days.  :2cents:
