70 Challenger Exterior Questions...

Hey All,

You guys have been loads of help in the past...  It's time once again for me to look to you for some advice. :bigsmile:

Here are my thoughts:
I have a plum crazy, stripe-delete 70 Challenger R/T with a silver grill, (soon to be) bumper guards with inserts, (soon to be magnum 500s) and a black vinyl top.  I have been thinking about painting the grill black but leaving the bumpy sandy stuff so I can convert it back to argent if I ever decide to.  I would also like to paint the tail panel (where the tail lights are) black to match the bumper guards (w/ inserts) and vinyl top.  Lastly I have been thinking about installing the front spoiler from the Challenger T/As (just for looks... and increased performance :roflsmiley:).

My Questions:
Should I leave the sandy stuff on there?  Or is there an easy way to put it back if I change my mind?  Should I leave it silver?  I have no idea if it's the original grill or not... the car has been 'gone through' fairly significantly.  Is the grill painted flat black?  Semi-gloss?

What type of paint should I use in the tail panel section?  Flat black?  Gloss black?  Organisol?  Was this a factory option at all on 70's?  Or is the closest thing the SE insert panels? :dunno:

Am I an idiot for wanting to install the front spoiler?  I dont have plans of installing a rear spoiler, but I think the front would look cool by itself. :clueless:

If you are going to paint the grille black sand off the texture. It would look funny if it had the texture and black. The silver is available with the correct texture in a rattle can so don't worry about if you decide you want to paint it silver again. the correct color is organasol black. the tailpanel I believe it body color expect for the T/A Challenger. As for the spoilers its up to you. I don't know if you could have ordered just the front from the factory or not, but I agree they look good. Hope this helps.

Being an R/T, your car should have come with a black grill and headlight bezels. It would probably be easier to strip the argent silver off, than to try to paint over it. The correct black for the grill is something slightly more glossy than flat black. I know that is wishy-washy, but there isn't any real paint code for it.

As for the tail panel, do you have the S/E type of tail panel? If so, they were argent silver, but I see no reason you couldn't paint that black too.

I put the front spoilers on my car, so you get a positive vote from me there.   :2thumbs:

Yea I thought you would say something like that...  My car is a true R/T car, but for whatever reason came with the argent grill.  I do not have an SE tail panel (and you're right they're argent... I was thinking black for some reason).  I would like to paint that tail panel black as well.  Does anyone know the correct paint type for the T/A's then (if they got that treatment originally)?  What's funny is when I was sanding that down before it got painted, my dad and I noticed there was black on that tailpanel as well.  The previous owner had put a $100 yellow paint job over the factory paint, so it's difficult to tell what's original.  Note: I have already painted the car, but am thinking about painting over the tail panel to tie the colors (and vinyl roof) together.

And we all agree the grill is organasol black?

Yes organasol black is correct for the grille and I am pretty certain for the tail panel as well.

A water clean-up type paint stripper and a scotch-brite pad will take the textured argent off the grille. The will likely be some yucky residue, but it will come off with a little lacquer thinner.

I've used semi-flat black out of a rattle can and had good results.

Are you speaking of the two small T/A chin spoilers or the one wide "snow plow" type spoiler that was on the real race cars? (I like the big one)

I'm looking for a stock-type look, so, yea, I'm talking about the two small T/A chin spoilers.  I think the 'race car' spoiler definately has a place (and I love how it looks on the actual Posey car) but it wouldn't look right on my car.

I used to think my 70 340 Challenger was an R/T,but realized from info on this great site that it wasn't considered an R/T from the factory.

Don't wanna get tooo into it... but the second Digit (letter) in the VIN is what identifies it.  The fifth digit only says what engine size.  I have a JS Challenger with the N engine option.
