Found a car now what?
« on: April 10, 2009 - 02:02:48 PM »
I found a 1967 Barracuda Notchback, 273 V-8, auto, looks original.  It isn't restored, but everything seems to be original.  The seller has not yet emailed me back yet, so I don't know the miles or how much rust it has.  What I need is somebody with more experience than I have to tell me what to look for and good questions to ask.  The car is a ways away from where I live so I would prefer not to waste a trip.  He is asking $3,000.   Thanks in advance for your input.

It would be nice if we had pics to go from. Given that, if you can't look at the car personally, then maybe someone can look at it for you? If you do hear back from the guy, and it sounds postitive, maybe make a post in the off-topic board about having someone in the area of wherever the car is, look at it for you.

If i were in your shoes, I would rather send a member here a couple of $ to look at the car, rather then send someone $3000 for a car that isn't anything like what you imagined.

Some pics.  Still no reply from the seller though.

I'd say a complete unmolested original, if not a bondo bucket(but don't expect zero rust) , would be well worth 3K

Sounds like a good price for a solid running driver. Aside from the obvious, the biggest problems in these older cars is the wiring. Usually connections (like bulkhead) that get corroded and cause a loss of a good ground. I would check the all the electrical stuff such as wiper motor (I had problems with a bad ground on my '68 notchback), headlights, dash lights (also a problem area), brake lights, turn signals, headlights, blower motor. Look under the car for rot. Check frame rails, possibly use a magnet to check body panels for fill (bondo). Check windows for signs of leakage. Back windows often end up leaking at the corners on notchbacks. Check the trunk for rust/signs of leakage. Check engine for obvious conditions like knocking, smoking. Look at the oil for anything like water/contaminents. Check color of antifreeze. Make sure tranny shifts into all gears smoothly. Look under hood for squirrels, mice, rats and chewed wiring. Sonds funny, but some stories have been told here on rodents!! A lot of stuff is just common sense. The big things that may cost you money is a rotten support structures like a frame rails or burned wiring or bum motor/tranny. they other stuff would be expected considering the price such as a cracked windshield or wipers that don't work ect!! Good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions.

I know it's easter weekend and all, but the seller hasn't contacted me yet.  The only means to communicate with them in the ad was by email.  I am pacing the house waiting for more pictures.  Also Thanks for the advice.  Do any of you live in Washington State?

I have the stock drum manual brakes on my '68 Barracuda and they do fine. No doubt the are not quite as effective as disc brakes. I think what's important is make sure the brakes are in good working order. I have new lines, pads, master cyinder, flushed lines ect. You may wish to upgrade to disc if the car has drum brakes all around like mine. Just make sure if you do purchase it and drive it, that they are in good working order!!

Drum brakes are fine if you live in the Country. If you ever have to navigate heavy traffic you fine out real fast how inadequate they are when a Lexus or some other new car decides to cut in front of you and jam the brakes. Unfortunately when you rear-end somebody it's ALWAYS your fault.  :grinyes:
