Suspension differences '72-'74 'Cudas
« on: April 01, 2009 - 07:53:07 AM »
I can't find much info on the '72-74 'Cudas. What are the differences in suspensions between a 318 Barracuda/Cuda and a 340 Cuda? Is there a difference? Are the torsion bars and sway bars for a 340 larger diameter? What about the rear leaf springs? Are there different spring rates/number of leafs between 318 and 340? Do 318 cars have rear sway bars or are they only on the 340 cars?
Thanks for your help. Everyone on this board has been really helpful!
Sorry for all the questions. This is my first E body. I have had B bodies all my life. I don't know a lot about E bodies.

Someone with more knowledge will probably chime in later but this is what I assume:
All small blocks came with the same smaller torsion bars (0.87 inch or something like that). Also the rear leaf springs are probably the same for all other than 440-6 and Hemi?

Front sway bar has probably been an option for atleast smaller engines as my 73 318 Chal didn't have one (I don't have knowledge if there has been different thickness ones available). For the rear bar I'm pretty sure that it has been an option only (and perhaps as a standard in rally package?)

My 74 Cuda has fatroy sway bars front and back as well.  Car was originally a 318 car (very low options).

I'd have to go dig in to some literature, but typically 318 cars were the same as 6 cylinder cars as far as t-bars and leaf springs go. 340 and 360 rallye cars were a step up from that. Sway bars could be standard or optional depending on packages ordered and other equipment on the car.

Actually a little more the 800 Barracudas and almost 850 Challengers made it out of the factory with Slant 6s in 1972.
Super low option cars usually. I see them on E-blay sometimes.

All 340 E-bodies in '72 and '73 as well as 360 cars in 1974 got the swaybars standard.
All 'Cudas whether they be 318, 340 or 360 in those years also had them.
All Challenger Rallyes had them

Of course you could order the HD suspension with front and rear swaybars on your plain jane /6 or 318 car but I have never come across one.

I ordered the heavy duty front suspension option on my 74'-318 Barracuda, it included tighter shocks, .90 front sway bar only, and had to be ordered with F70-14 wide oval firestones or the narrower E78-14 radials. Cost of the option was $18. plus the tires option @ $129.
I bought the rear bar at the dealer, and found the factory holes on the frame which fit the self tapping " Anchor screws". The rear kit came complete with the plates and links. Cost was $105.
Without the rear sway bar the rear will wobble on hard power turns and spin 180* I think it (car) rocks the leafs into an arch and pitches forward to un-hook the back tires and plant the fronts. It also bent the rear shackles. So , that's when I bought the rear bar.
