    which way should the thermostat sit, 318 Cui.

    Hi Guys..

    After my first start up after 8 years on my 318 70´ Challenger its running a littel hot. so just to be sure will hear you Guys which way should the thermostat sit.

    The elektric fan start after 6-8 minutes at idle. The fan swich start at 185 degrees F

    The spring should be down in the block.  Most thermosatats have an arrow on them showing flow direction.

    Hi Guys

    Thanks for the back up.

    The new thermostat was a 180 f with that its running a littel hot at idle. Just mountet a 160 f and its it look better. what thermostat do you guys recomment..

    I have a 180* thermostat. I believe that is the norm, but I don't think a 160* is the way to go.   :2cents:

    Maybe you have other issues with the cooling system? Have you actually driven the car, or is all this from just letting it idle? If so, you really need to drive it to know what you have.

    I have not test driven the car yet. but The Cooling system are all new. I Think I will let it be to i have the car out for a spind...

    I like electric fans but they do have a hard time cooling when standing still. At 20-25 mph or more its fine but not stop.

    I run a 160 T stat year round but in the cold Fall and early spring time I stick some cardboard in front of the rad.....did you know in marine boats the 318 motor is common and there are even 140 T stats....but the cooling is way different were the water cools off the exhaust manifolds too.

    In the summer I like 160 T stats....180 works but has little margin if you get in to stop and go traffic...unless you are runing dual electric fans with a shroud or a mechanical fan with a shroud.

    I always run 180* , too cool is not good
    if it is running hot with a 180* the cooling system is not efficient enough

    But I like running the exhaust intake heat to help vaporize the fuel so it can burn, if the intake is cold then I would run a 180 in the summer and a 195 even in the cool weather.

    Maybe Michigan gasoline is different but I have no problems with vapor lock even in upper 80 degree weather which is about as hot as it gets here...even then the nights cool off in to the 60's, that is why I found its best to leave the exhaust heat passage open on the intake and just use a compost gasket under the carb.
