Steering shaft cross pin removal.......whats the trick?
« on: April 12, 2009 - 06:55:57 PM »
Ok...I give up.

Whats the trick in getting the cross pin (the one at the bottom of the steering shaft that goes inside the coupler) out of the shaft so I can replace it?

I was able to use a BFH and get it out to the point of one side being flush with the shaft...but then I am stuck.....tried a drift but keeps slipping off.......just cant get that mutha to move.

Rebuilding the coupler and the kit comes with a newcross pin.

Thanks guys.

You need a "punch" to do the job. I don't know the size, but I used an old bolt from my valve covers, and the BFH and it worked fine.

Should it be driven from one side versus the other?

My issue is the punch/drift keeps slidding off the end of the pin.....its in there REALLY tight.....

I also am trying not to mar up the shaft too much.....

Use the punch on whichever side is the deepest in the hole. I have a brass drift the right size that is about 2 feet long, it makes it easy.
