Anyone paint a rim?
« on: April 14, 2009 - 11:24:58 PM »
Has anyone painted their own rims? The rims on my car are currently gray. I was thinking about making them black to better match the grill and the old Dukes of Hazard rims. Any suggestions? Comments? Paint choices?

If it helps, they are Buick GM wheels. Couldn't tell you the exact specs, just that they're off the T-Type/Grand National. And as you can see, the centers between the metal lines are painted.

I was wondering if the areas you were thinking about painting are smooth or textured?  Textured might make sanding a little harder.

I painted the black areas of my Magnum 500s a few years ago. Sanded down to roughen the area.  Not quite sure I remember if I primed or not.  I made little masking areas then used semi-gloss black wheel paint, then used fine steel wool to clean up any over spray.

Did those GM wheels fit without adaptors?  I thought most GM wheels were 4 3/4", not 4 1/2" like Mopar/Ford?  :clueless:

My ET Mags are 37 years old.  I painted them black in 1973 and then again last summer.  They were originally grey in color.  I painted them black to match the black on my car.  I used KRYLON Semi-Flat Black spray paint from Walmart at $3.24 per can.  Used 2 cans to do 4 wheels.

I wet sanded the wheels with 400 grit paper.  Wiped them down with Ditzler wax & grease remover and then carefully masked off the painted areas.  Sprayed several light coats of paint...let them dry and then removed the tape.

I like the wheels but think black might be too stark especially on the pink car....Look at Duplicolor's Wheel paint in Graphite.. I've used this on a couple of sets, real easy. One set was a honeycomb like style that would have been difficult to prep, all I did was spray oven cleaner on them & pressure washed, then wiped down with mineral spirits. After the paint set up a few minutes I put each wheel on the back & ran the car on jack stands & used lacquer thinner on a rag to remove the excess from the outer rim. You will need to do a lot of taping or wiping to keep your spokes shiny.    If your looking for a good satin black look at Duplicolor's Engine enamel.
