It is difficult to tell from the way you described it but when I owned a 489SG it was quite a bit harder to break away one axle from the other. All I can say from what you say is that your SG works somewhat but may be on the way out. The 489 style is difficult to rebuild but can be done. It has ben described on this site before how to do it. Requires a machinist with some know how.

essentially what you are doing copies the factory test that is done in the car. I think yours measures a little low but not too bad. I don't remember what the spec is though.
