Lower steering column bearing ???????
« on: April 12, 2009 - 07:35:45 PM »
I am putting my steering column back together and I think I may still be missing something.....

The bottom of the column I have looks like this:

The shaft seems to have what looks to be bearing mating marks on it down in that area and the picture in the manual shows what looks to be  smaller tube that comes out of what I have but it doesnt list a bearing or anything being there.....

Any chance someone has a picture of the end of their steering column for me to look at?

I went to the dealer and the parts book doesnt show anything for my car .....cant figure this one out......

Is the shaft supposed to just float in the lower end???

There's no bearing in the bottom of an e body column. A plastic piece I believe ships up in there as I recall. but the coupler keeps the shaft centered

Oh! Cool!  That would be great.....

Maybe the shaft I have was in something else then .....

I looked at a a column from a Dart that I have for parts and it too has no lower bearing....

.........still cant figure out why the diagram shows what it shows....it almost looks like there is a tube within the main tube and some sort of a round end cap on the end......????

I have repainted the parts and will be putting it all back together in a day or two.....dont want to get it all together and find out I am missing stuff...LOL

If anyone could take a picture of the end of their column as assembled in the car that would really help!

Does it look like what I have in my picture above?

I think the "sleeve" I am seeing in th picture is actually the shifter tube sticking out.....so I guess I am trying to find out what goes in the end if you have a console car...sounds like "nothing" is the right answer.....

70 only and column shift have a lever at the end. On the 70 it is for the linkage to the frame/trans for when you put the car in park or reverse, it allows you to pull the key out. And of course if column, it's for the PRND21 selector :2thumbs:

Does anyone make that plastic sleeve/bushing?  Our steering column shaft is actually rubbing on the metal shifter tubing.

Someone has the bushing , not sure who right now
if the shaft is rubbing the housing you can loosen the the bolts on the firewall & move the column around as the holes are oversize & allow about an inch of adjustment in all directions
