5x7's in kick panels
« on: June 06, 2009 - 11:30:51 PM »
i was going through some older posts where some members have used 5 1/4 and some even used 6 1/2's. i think i'm going to try the 6 1/2's but if i don't have enough room i'm thinking of useing some 5x7's. the depth and magnet seem to be the same as a 5 1/4.
anyone ever use these, will they out perform the round speakers?

The kicker panels have stuff behind them you know. Like emergency brake stuff and clips and what not. Might fit the kicker, but maybe not in the hole very good :dunno:

Never cared for 5X7s...In the late '70s, when I was installing radios in new cars the Monte Carlos used them in the package tray, never sounded good... Check these Polks

so 5 1/4s are better than the 5x7's?
i checked out that link and the mounting depth is 2'', the 6 1/2's i looked at today only require 2 5/16''. i'm going to try some normal ones first besides they are sold out and don't expect any till the end of july. i wish they would list magnet diameter  ???

I've never heard a good sounding 5x7. Bought some for another car I had. If you wanted to use them as a midrange/high driver they might be ok.
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

Oval speakers are not the best design for good sound imo. I dont even like coaxials myself. Once you hear a good set of component speakers you will never want to go back to coaxials or 5x7/6x9 unless it is for rear fill. I would rather have a smallish 5 1/4 component set than a 5x7 or even 6x9 coaxial. Just my  :2cents:

Now you can probably get a set of 5/7's with a neodymium magnet and that should drastically cut down on the mounting depth.

o.k dumb question..... what is a coaxial? this is how audio handicapped i am now days. when i was into loud tunes you hooked up as many speakers with as many amps that were the size of a beer keg and put out about 100 amps each, i thought my buddy was god when he showed up to a party with an equilizer :cooldancing:
oh yeah and pheonix gold was the sh!t.
bullit, i believe the cutout diameter their talking about is the actual size of hole required for the speaker, not the magnet.

Yea I think I jumped to a conclusion...Co-Axial = two speakers in most adds the tweeter, there are also Tri & Quuad-Axial.. I never get more than Co-Axial .
As for speakers in the kick panel don't expect too much as the location is  poor for base reproduction & the highs are lost in the carpet.  You just want good enough quality to avoid distortion, at best the speakers will create fuller sound, you might consider fitting a couple of tweeters in the center dash location if you don't have the 3-speaker dash.

Guys,

I played with all these options in my mind. I do have a nice aftermarket speaker in my dash, but it still can't handle all that much Oomph. Even 6" round speakers can't handle all that much, so I gave up on the kick panel idea. I didn't want to hack up my door panels either.  My best solution was putting the best 6X9" speakers I could find in the back, along with a 600 Watt amp in the trunk to help me hear the music above the exhaust.     Where I got tricky was I didn't connect the dash speaker to the amp in the trunk. So I have most of the music going thru the rear speakers(by way of the fader control on the radio), but still some from the dash that just gets fed from one channel from the radio. It works well enough for me.

I dunno Mike, you would be surprised to find out how much a little speaker can take. I was looking at a set of Boston Acoustic neo-m tweeters and those little 1" puppies take 150 rms and 300 peak watts. Thats serious power for any speaker, much less a tweeter. I am pretty sure my Z-6's can handle 250 rms and my JL Audio ZR's can handle the same. At one time I had 2 sets of components and an underrated 600 watts going to my front stage alone. I had the front half of a 450/4 powering a set and a 300/2 powering a set. Yeah it was a little overkill but it sure got loud while staying crystal clear.
