standard for the 4 speed cars (non dana of course) was 3.23 open with 3.91 suregrip an option or 3.23 suregrip. I believe from 72 on 3.23 was the lowest factory gear in a passenger car.

I would be shocked if 3:55's were put on 72-74 E-bodies. I think someone put those gears in there from an earlier year car.

Hi 383dart
what is the number on the case?  Is it 741 by any chance?

Ok so you have the correct case.  The option code (D56) is listed for Mopars with 3.55:1 gear ratios from 1969 to 1974. If you could come up with a broadcast sheet for that car and find that code on it you would know for sure.

I've seen both a '73 Chally auto and a '73 Cuda 4 speed with stock 3.55 gears. My '71 has them too (OEM gears) but I'm not sure if they were stock. They seem to have been used in small block cars more than the big block cars that usually had 3.23's.
