Are 73 Cuda brake lines single or double flared at fittings ?
« on: April 16, 2009 - 06:26:19 PM »
My brake line to the rear at the prop valve is broke. I don't want to buy a whole new line if I can help it. The line at the fitting is broke.

Is the flare a single or double. I am hoping I can just get slip the old fitting on the line and re-flare it.

I went to try out the car after the new gas tank and see if the speedo works and I had no brakes!.
Along with all the other things wrong with the car, when I started to change the front drums back to discs the rear brake line at the prop valve is broke.
Thanks!
Don

If I understand you right, the line is broken near the end. If you have enough slack, I would think you could slide the fitting up the line, cut off the end of the line, reflare it, slide the fitting back in place and make it back up. I've flared plenty of copper tubing, but brake lines are pretty tough and not maleable like copper. I don't know how easy it would be to flare. I'd try it. As it stands you're going to have to replace it anyway!! Good luck! :2thumbs:

If you need to replace that line, it's not that big of a deal. My hard part was getting the fitting off the proportioning valve. Oh... If you are sliding the new line back from the engine bay, DON'T let it slide across both terminals of your battery.    :22yikes:   :eek2:

...Not that I know anything about this.   :misbehaving:

Thanks!
My battery is already disconnected!
Not that I would know anything about that either. Well maybe I had a Dodge 330 that I was loosening up the valve cover bolts and maybe the steel wire loom fell across the block and the alt hot terminal, and maybe between the smoke and the horn blowing I finally pulled enough wires to stop the melee!
Word of advice.......
ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!!! :eek2:

Don,

True confession time here. My battery WAS disconnected. If you are going to replace that front to back brake line, get the battery out of the engine compartment. You would be surprised about how many sparks and how hot that brake line can get.   :eek7:
