440 Source Recall on Hyd Roller Lifters
« on: April 14, 2009 - 07:43:50 PM »
I just got a phone call from 440 Source. It seems there has been a factory recall on the hydraulic roller lifter sets that they have been selling. No exchange, only a full refund. The problem is my engine has been assembled. The other problem is that another set by another manufacturer my be different enough to cause me to have to buy another set of push rods!! My rockers are adjustable, so maybe I'll get lucky!! To say the least I am peeved!! :swear: :stomp: Now I've got to disassemble what was just assembled!! :pullinghair:I guess on the positive side is that the motor has not been run yet and I didn't suffer a catastrophic engine failure from a defective set of lifters!! :2thumbs: Anybody out there that is using these and hasn't heard!! Beware. You may want to call 440 Source for more info!! Their web site now lists these lifters as "out of stock". I don't know if all have been recalled or maybe just a bad batch?? But since I wasn't offered a replacement set, I am thinking the entire line was defective?? I just wanted to pass this info along to my fellow mopar buds out there!!

Isn't that a PITA     glad you found out now instead of after the failure.  Maybe you'll get lucky on the push rod lenght when you get replacement rollers. I am not sure without a comparison

As moparal stated .. feel lucky. cause i guarantee you if you grenaded your motor brandon would have told you to go pound sand and it was someone else part issue. Rather than being frustrated I would feel lucky.

Brandon is claiming this:

The factory informed us they had a production batch which may have a metallurgy issue. We have sold hundreds of sets of these lifters, and this particular production batch affected 24 sets. So, rather than take any chances, we decided to call these 24 customers and have them return the lifters for a full refund.

Are you that unlucky matt..... I smell BS hereon brandons part.....  :2cents:

Thanks for the info Jason on the lifters. I was wondering where it came from?? I sent an email to 440 Source and asked if they were going to pay me for the labor to disassemble and reassemble my motor and if they were going to provide a new gasket set. Also reimbursement If I have to get a new set of pushrods due to possible differences in a new lifter set. We'll see what they say. I think I know what the response will be....... :crying:

Scat had a small metalurgy issue with the SIR rods.. the ends pulled orr. China has severe issues with metalurgy because they used recycled stel for eveything and it's not as pure. Least that's what I can determine anyway. My guess is, this shipping container had more than those 24 sets, and the whole run is messed up. At least he's trying. I still would have used Comps tho. :money:

I had read somewhere that the 440 Source lifters were made by Johnson lifters. Not sure how true that is, but have been of the opinion that Johnson lifters were a good product. Anyway, since I'm not taking any chances and am glad I didn't grenande the motor, I've ordered a set of Comp Cams hyd roller lifters. Yeah, they were expensive!! :money:

Well,
I got the old 440 Source hyd roller lifters out and installed the Comp Cams lifters today. I noticed as much as .006"-.007" on an inch difference between lifters on the 440 Source ones and only about .002-.003" difference between the lifters on the Comp Cams lifters. the Comp Cams lifters were about .030" taller than the 440 Source ones. I made 1/2 turn adjustment on the rockers and installed the replacements. The pushrods were close to the rockers, but didn't touch. Not much more adjustment available. Whew!! :eek7: Should be OK. Thank goodness I didn't have to get new pushrods, but not much difference between the sets. Only big difference was in the price! :22yikes:I talked to 440 Source today to get the info I need to return the old lifters. Didn't even get an "I am sorry" or "Kiss my foot". It would have gone a long way to make me a little less angry over the whole thing!! :swear:
