History Repeating?
« on: April 24, 2009 - 09:51:38 AM »
Does it look history is repeating itself before our own eyes?

Mid 1960's-early 1970's: Cheap fuel and the consumer desire for power leds to muscle cars mainia, the HEMI is king.  Than the government steps in, demands change, insurance makes muscle unaffordable, gas costs skyrockets due to politics....muscle car era is over.

Mid to Late 2000's: Cheap fuel, consumer desire for power, manufacturers build new high tech muscle cars, the big HEMI and R/T's returns, life is good.  NOW, government is interviening with guzzler tax, more emissions, carbon reduction, demanding fuel mileage and may take over companies and dictate what cars will be built, fuel was $4/gallon and will go back (with government help) and it looks like the new muscle car era will end.

Hummm....get those HEMI's while you can  :grinyes:

No don't buy one now, if history does repeat itself, then soon you will be able to buys these cars for a fraction of MSRP. A friend of mine told me in that a dealership offered him two 71 hemi roadrunners for the less than the price of one, because he couldn't off load them. Could you imagine being able to pick up a new SRT for around 20k.  :naughty:

I remember deals back then as well because dealers could not sell them.  But it does sound as history is repeating itself.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I would be afraid to buy a new Challenger or Camaro because what if the car companies go down. Then how the heck are you going to get parts fro the newer cars ???

Same places we have always got the majority of our replacement parts for our vehicles, aftermarket suppliers and rebuilders!

I'm afraid the attack on our beloved muscle cars won't be the only repeat of history from the 70's.

I wasn't around in the 70's when all this stuff went down, but the more I read in history texts and the more people I talk to who did live in the 70's and were old enough to have a real recollection of what took place the more it sounds like the next four years are going to be a worse version of the Carter days. I hope I'm wrong though, but if I'm not starting in 2012 there will be a republican in the oval office for the following 12 years.  :cooldancing:

I guess if high prices and waiting in gas lines on your assigned day (It went by your plate #), double digit interest rates on housing and about the same unemployment rate was better than now, than you can honestly say things are worse today. For the typical person it still isn't as bad but it's getting there. We'll have to see if doing the exact opposite of what Reagan did works or not.  :dunno:

I think it is funny how so many people think that the good economy we had during Clinton's administration was from Clinton's work. It's not called Reagan-nomics for no reason!

As far as new Hemis go, I remember when the SRT-8 came out it was selling for around 58,000 here in North Texas. Now I see them all the time on the internet for 43,000. I would be pissed if I bought one brand new for 58 and the next year they were down to 43.

That is exactly why we decided to buy our SRT-8 now (not to mention they may not be around much longer in production).  They may get cheaper before they go up again, but I think we did well for an 08.

I dont think anyone can claim they did real good or bad on any administration.  Each and every one that has been in office from the very start of the nation has good points and bad.  I was around during some of the years you were talking about and when the gas stuff went on.  I dont want to blame anyone but I think we all have to take blame for some of what is going on.  We let things get out of hand and did not pay attention to what we were doing when we bought things not made here.  I hope that things get better soon but I think it will take some time to get back on the road.  Seems we are back to what it was like in the sixties.
