They have to rotate, and once they get cupped they stop rotating. I've done that more than once, bent a stock pushrod for no apparent reason. Look the lifter and lobe over and if everything is OK put a pushrod in and don't get too anal about it. Don't make a minor repair into a 10K engine rebuild
