383-Magnum or 440-Magnum... Which One Has Higher Redline?
« on: June 04, 2009 - 09:08:31 PM »
I am curious as to which hi-po Mopar engine has a higher redline. The 383-Magnum or the 440-Magnum. And is there an exact redline?

A Car Life (Feb., 1969) road test of a '69 383 Super Bee listed 110.2 mph @ 5800 rpm. That sounds about right as far as the redline goes.

Car Life (July, 1969) took a '69 Super with 440-6 bbl up to 6,000 rpm.

I have Car Life tests of 440-4 bbl Mopars, but the testers didn't rev them past 5200 and I know they could rev higher than that.

i think that the 383 can be revved higher because of the stroke

Not exactly on topic but a local Mopar club member is a race engine builder, who's father was into drag racing in the 60's, said that the RPMs are limited on the hydraulic lifter engines due to liter pump up causing what I think is called valve float.  Newer lifter designs have bleed-off to prevent this but back in the day they used to do something to the rocker arms, can't remember exactly what, that helped.

the piston speed is slower in the 383 due to the shorter stroke so it could rev higher ,it is still limited by valve spring pressure

 :iagree:

All redlines are theoretical tho. Some will explode lower than that, some will take it and explode at higher or much higher. Technically, redline is when the first part fails...
