Cast vs forged cranks?
« on: May 05, 2009 - 09:12:41 AM »
:drama: I was watching the Toyota Tundra commercial and it shows a cast and a forged crank being tested with some type of tensile tester;  the cast crank breaks at 3-4kps while the forged crank was still holding at 12-13kps.  Is this type dramatization correct; is there that much difference between the two. When will a forged crank ever let go??  :burnout:

Tensile? like they pulled it apart? Forged is stronger. How much depends on the material and the construction, like anything else. A cast crank Mopar is a bit stronger than  cast crank Chevy, because the steel is better and they are beefier. A factory forged crank mopar is about 30% stronger than a cast crank factory mopar. An aftermarket crank with better steel and larger radii will be stronger still. Toyota cranks, like Nissan and Honda, are works of art and strong as hell. There's reasons why they dont break...lol.

The Toyota motor is fine. I'd be more concerned with why every time I see a big Tundra loaded down in the bed on 295 here the rearend is dragging on the ground.  :clueless:
