Another Elec system not charging

Don't want to but in on burrpenick's thread so I'll start another one.

I have been playing with my charging system this weekend ('72 'cuda). 

The alternator doesn't seem to be producing any charge. 

I tried a couple of tests with a voltmeter and found the regulator and engine grounds are good (no volts drop there), but the Alt field wire that comes from the ignition is not reading a full 12 V (it's about 11 V).

The ammeter is in circuit but I didn't think it would cause as much drop as that !

Anyway, the other thing is that I've never actually had the car charging (it was in bits when I got it with no alternator).

The alternator is from a truck which was running OK so I guess it is good.

Any ideas before I buy another regulator ?

I would have your altenator and battery checked to make sure they are both good before you move onto something else

when I went to start my chally one time the thing wouldn't crank, found out that both the battery and alternator was bad, my guess was the altenator shot craps and drained the battery until it was no good also

Sorry but having things checked by other people is really not my style .

The battery is definitely good.

I may try full field on the alternator and see what happens.

OK, full field produced alternator output so I replaced the regulator = all working now.
