So does that mean all VIN rivets sold today are illegal, or were these guys just not authorized to be selling them?

Read it again please? In the first paragraph about the middle there is a sentence that calls it out pretty clearly.  ;)

I do encourage everyone to do their own research on VIN laws, do not take my word for it, look up the laws yourself & draw your own conclusions.  :2cents:

I wrote to the Sheriff to see what his response is on this matter.

When we restored the Chally (it had a salvage title) I of course had to have it inspected by the State Highway Patrol to get a current title. Before the new dash was installed I questioned this very aspect of legality. I was told by the inspection officer that the vin tag would need be reinstalled as came from factory, however he also said (and I'm sure off the record) that it would be permissible to cut the factory rivets and glue the original vin to the new dash pad. He said the primary factor and importance was that title vin and dash vin matched. If they did not.................."You got a lot of splain to do Lucy."  However since the engine was not a matching vin number I had to have a signed and notorazied document from the vendor from whom I bought it from that that car had been scraped and sold for parts, producing a copy of that car's title and salvage regersteration as a "parts vechicle".

So it was illegal for these 2 guys to be selling them, but not illegal for them to be sold by an authorized party.

Darn, I'm confused. If you replace your dash pad, and you remove the VIN plate from the old one, you should only use the factory rivets to install on the new dash to be legal. If there is an authorized place that sells rivets, do they have to install them? If they don't how would anyone know which VIN plate was installed on which vehicle?

My original VIN plate is still on my original dash, and I don't know yet if I will have to replace the dash. Don't have the original engine or trans though, so what can of worms does that open up?

chally you have it correct as i mentioned in the other thread on vins .rivets and vins can be obtained from an otherized outlet i.e.manufacture and the dmv will help any legit car owner . for years year one sold dash pads with a pair of rivets but not separatly . i have said on this forum that every one should contact the dmv rather than just post opinions .its good to see alaska ta steping up with legit info here .

Here's some pretty good info.  Hebe got me looking, and as has been mentioned, there is always a correct way to move VIN tags, get rivets, etc.  Just make sure you contact your local DMV and any other states that might be involved.  It also says to keep as many of the original numbers as possible, including the door stickers.  If you have any doubts, check this out: http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/april2003/collision.htm

Okay, I received a response to my email to the Macomb County Sheriff to call the Detective.

I mentioned to the Dective how I have owned the car for 20+ years, and had just recently came across a Original Dash, and wanted to replace my existing cracked dash. So I was told it is Crime to tamper or remove the Vin Tag, it also is a Crime to have in possession the Repro Rivets, he went on to say you would not want to have these in your glove box and be pulled over. He mentions they usually have a force go to shows and check Vin Tags, anything such as removed, or glued/taped on Vin Tag, would raise a RED Flag. Now, the other part off the record, it was said, since I made this call in good faith, and looking to do this to better improve my classic, if I was to go ahead and do this, using the repro rivets, he would see no problem.

So who can actually move/reinstall the VIN tag from one dash to another? Sheriff, DMV, Chrysler?

I guess this is one reason for using a dash cap. You can leave the original tag and riviots in place and still have a nice dash. That is the way I went with my two challengers.

Every state has different laws, check with your local DMV.

mike for what its worth i install new dash pads in every e  body i buy that has a crack . what i did was contact my closest state patrol officer and he actualy came to see my collection and we had a long discussion about what i can and cant do . his point is if i have a new pad with only 2 rivets purchased togeather for repair i can install them my self or he can do it .but he said it would behove me to contact him when i need him and he would come out and over see the install . as he said its free and he works for me joe public . when we all interact in good faith with our law inforcement we all come out ahead . in my case he installed my vin and all i had to do is raise the collumn and install the 4 bolts along the vents and re tighten the 2 bolts on each side of the dash frame .haveing the dash accessible helps the officer to do his job quickly, the same would apply if you trailer your car to a dmv location .
