FY4 Paint
« on: May 20, 2009 - 07:39:55 AM »
I got an email from a friend who is new to the Mopar hobby. He bought a '70 Super Bee and is doing the sheetmetal repairs and body work.Below is the email he sent me.
"One question, I am about to purchase paint for the car.  I am going to go with Base Coat clear coat but the company I am going to purchase the gallon of paint states that PPG or Dupont do not have the exact chip match anymore for a Dodge 1970 Fy4 .  It seems like the closest they have is 1975 Chevy gold metallic???   Are there companies out there that sell paint to the exact FY4 color code?? "
Has anyone run into this before? Is the paint store wrong? Can anyone help?

Who sells the correct FY4 paint in a basecoat/ clearcoat? How about in a single stage?

No replies?  I am surprised.
Someone on here has to know where to find this color paint.
Keep trying!

I was able to get PPG in Y4 a few years ago when my Cuda was painted.  I don't know about the variants between 70-74, I would think they are the same

There is a good resource at Autocolorlibrary.com.
YOu can print out the sheets there, and they have all the codes listed, with the PPG numbers.

Go to a good local paint store, and see if they can cross reference to get a sample. The guys should also be able to match a chip with a spectrum analyzer.

MOst of the diffuculty lies in the fact that the  old PPG codes are  DBL (laquer) I think. Nowadays they use DBU (Urethane) If you can find a shop, they might be able to cross reference the number.
If you are going to use waterborne, thats unfamiliar territory here.

Good luck, and let me know how it goes!
