posi retainer clip probs ...UPDATE for you RAM owners!
« on: December 02, 2010 - 12:43:43 PM »
Ok not an E-bod but an 02 Ram1500. From what I see on the internet the clutch pack retainer clips are a common problem. Found a piece of one loose in the housing. I need to save this rear end before anything drastic happens. Any one replace these before?? Have knowlege of the procedure?? My experience on rear ends ends at spyder gears. I dont want to just tear it all down and then find out I need some special tools or something.  :clueless:  :banghead:

Thanks in advance

no replies...  :crying:

figured out a few things on my own!   :cooldancing:

I did a bunch of research, seems to be this is a VERY COMMON PROBLEM on 02-05 Ram 1500's w posi. Your dealer knows this! Turns out to of them were bad. The good new is  if you catch the problem before the pieces of broken clips chew the case up the repair is not that expensive. New clips my cost were $7.55. (the clutch packs and gears looked fine). The updated clips are beefier than the originals. I admit I know jack about this, I take things apart NOT put them together!!

Anyway... We made a tool out of a explorer torsion bar to back off the adjusters. No need to go to the snappy or matty man. Of course I've got this kind of stuff laying around. You can compress the clutch packs w 3/4 inch bolts and a few washers. After that things were pretty basic. Just put back together in reverse order.

Still have one question tho... even tho I marked where the adjusters were before I backed them out I'd still like to check the lash.(things should be close tho). I've got a dial indicator, I know the spec, but what am I baseing the measure off of??????   :clueless:  I know BIGS U dumb azzzzz........................

Four evenly spaced spots,go with the tightest one.
Sorry I just seen this post BIGS, I went down this road last year and learned about the bolts and washer trick to compress the clutch pack. I made a tool out of a bolt for a front wheel drive Chrysler transmission, but was told after wards that you can use a Phillips screwdriver and spin the spanners thru the little holes on the side. (I like the home made tools better)

Terry , your custom tool is more Hi-TECH than mine thats for sure! I spun the torsion bar with a pipe wrench!  ::)

I checked at 2 intervals before I put it all back together / I was at.006.  :cooldancing:
