Valve spring question
« on: June 09, 2009 - 02:40:25 AM »
I could use some help with my 383 HP rebuild. I have an engle K-56 cam with the 833 springs. Engle recommends the minimum installed height, of the valve springs, at 1.90 inches to prevent excessive cam wear. My problem is that after the valve job the spring height was at 1.85 inches. The shop that is rebuilding my heads said that he is relutant to cut the spring pockets to get to 1.90 inches spring height. The other problem is the 833 springs are a larger diameter then the stock springs and he said the springs, because of the size difference, may move around in the pocket causing wear to the spring pockets. Also the stock retainers don't sit in the springs very well as they are a smaller diameter than the springs. The new springs are also taller than the stock springs. My options are to use the old valve springs or to get another set, but what kind. I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks,  Steve

Replace the valve spring retainers with a taller retainer & use the 10* parts

Is that a single with dampner or dual spring assembly? If its dual the spring seat needs to be cut so the spring sits flush on the head. You can use the offset retainer as CP suggests to. In twerms of tension, more spring is better than less. I found Engle to be very careful about spring tension. It's a good habit for them to do so I'm not complaining. I actually went about 40lbs stiffer for the one I had and there's been no issues, but it was not a ".904" specific lobe design. You would probably be fine just installing the spring at 1.85.

You need to be careful with your total installed valve height as well. If after grinding the valve seats, your valve sits too deep in the pocket, your valve will be too high. That will cause bad valvetrain geometry, which in turn will wear your valve guides quickly. You can test for coil bind at 1.850. If you still have clearance between the coils you should be OK
If I cant fix it, it's broke
