Fuel system question???
« on: April 27, 2010 - 10:18:46 AM »
Fuel system question/situation that I’m hoping someone can help with.  Here’s the situation….

I have a 72 Challenger and I’m putting in a 70 Challenger drive train (440 six pack etc, no emissions).  The original gas tank for this car needed to be replaced so I bought a new tank for a 70 model without ECS.  The original tank had 4 vent tubes on the side however the new tank has no vent tubes at all, only the holes for the sending unit and the filler neck.  Additionally there doesn’t appear to be any way for the system to vent via my original 72 filler neck so my question is how do I vent the system?  Is there a different style filler neck for 72 vs. 70 models?   :clueless:

Thanks in advance for any input, advice and direction you all can provide!

The 70 filler tube had a vent line that ran down thru the trunk into the frame rail. You can get by with a vented gas cap if you want to take the easy way out.

I was planning on using one of those nice chrome flip-top caps.  I assume there wouldn't be any clearance issues with the vented cap?   By the way, thanks for response guys!

The replacement gas tanks do NOT have expansion chambers in the tanks like the OEM tanks had.  So the problem is if the fuel tank is full, and the car is parked, and if its a hot day and the fuel heats up after filling the tank, it can overflow the tank/filler tube and run down the outside of the quarter panel.  Not good for the paint job.
The best couple suggestions I have heard include:  drive about 10 miles after filling the tank to drop the fuel level and give room in the tank for expansion.  Second suggestion was don't fill the tank all the way full.   Just something to think about.

If you're putting in the 440-6, I would also install the vapor separator by the fuel pump, the extra 1/4" return line, the 3/8" pickup, and the 3/8" fuel line.  I would then add the little nipple to the top of the fuel filler tube then run the vent line into the rail just like stock a stock 70.  A vented cap allows air in but not out through it's one way valve. The pressure has to go somewhere.  If you install the vent, fuel and vapor can exit there before forcing it's way past your gas cap seal, then running down your paint.

BTW, my car has Urethane paint with hardener in it. Fuel doesn't hurt it if it burps out the side.
