74 Barracuda bumper modification
« on: June 14, 2009 - 06:54:24 PM »
Hello,
I have a 74 cuda and have new 74 bumpers and want to move the bumpers in, do I need the 70-72 brackets and is there any other modifications? Any help is appreciated.

I see issues with your quest to move the bumpers in.  What you need is 70-71 bumper brackets and bumpers.  If you get the correct brackets . . . the bolt holes won't line up for your 74 bumper to attach so you need the bumpers also for it to work.  I have heard that some have been able to fabricate a solution using the existing 74 brackets but thats out of my league.    Hope this helps.

I remember a thread a while ago (2 years?) someone showed on how to modify the later year brackets and shortening them to go with 70-71 bumpers.

I tried looking for it but by now the pics are probably gone anyway.

I used that thread for my modification.  Works very well.

The only thing I had to do was to notch a little out of the spot where the fender and rad support meet to clear the bumper bracket.

Good luck.

On my wife's 73, I also removed the reinforcement and elongated the holes in the brackets where the bumper bolted on. Turned out great and got rid of 50 pounds of dead weight.
As for the rear, I just used a 72 bumper and bumper brackets. It was the easiest way to go.

I only run the inner brackets. The straight ones. Just fill the holes with bumper bolts. Re drill/slott the holes where needed.  In the back...Get 70-72 rear brackets. They still wern't close enough,So I cut out 3/4" and welded them back up.Then packed them out to get it perfect.  you can do it easy.

Anyone know a good starting point of shortening the length on 1974 rear bumper brackets?
