Tear down questions--part 2
« on: June 17, 2009 - 01:37:08 AM »
I put a thread in the off topic section about the unusual things a person can find when they tear down their cars.  I am in the final stages of blocking out my car and hope to have it in the paint shop by the end of the month. Today I was stripng the mirrors and found my drivers side to be half chrome ---the pedestal part.  This leads me to my question???   How well does epoxy primer stick to it??? Should I try and remove the chrome which would be a lot of work----or can I just scuff it up and prime.  It looks like it was just primed and painted with nothing done to the chrome.  Would hate to go thru all this preparation and then have the mirror flake apart.  This got me wondering what guys do to prep a chrome bumper if they paint them body color..    Thanks   Doug

If the chrome is in good shape and not pealing I would scuf it up then put a real good self etching primer on it   :2cents:.  They used what ever parts were in front of them at times and did not take a lot of time when it came to painting either.  I was working in a CPD dealership in 1973 and washed a new Valient that had dart on one side that was painted white.  I did not know it when I started to pressure wash it that the white paint would come off and it be Dark Green under it.  The paint had not been even sanded or anything and just painted over.  The dealer was really mad until he started to look at it and saw what they had done and finally figured out that it was not my fault that the paint came off.  We had to repaint the car white.  It was already sold.  We also had to fix the badging to make it the same on both sides.  Just thought I would share this.  I do not think I will ever forget it.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

yep, a coat or two of etching primer should be fine, but I recommend few coats of a good grade 2k primer, epoxy would be perfect after the etching primer has been scuffed with red scotch pad
