70 cuda speedo cable

Trying to put on new speedo cable.How do you get the plastic part over the the housing?It just wont go on.

I found with the last one I put on that the metal inside cable was too long, so if you hooked up the transmission end then the speedo end wouldn't go on. I took it out and ground a little off of one of the metal square ends, and everything fit.  Good luck.
