Any plumbers here?
« on: July 03, 2009 - 01:26:44 AM »
:1zhelp:  I have a double stainless sink in the kitchen.  When pouring water down the drain from either side, a smell comes out that isn't right.  I have checked the plastic drain pipes under the sink, and they all look good without any leakage or looseness.  Sometime that same smell is present in the kitchen when you walk in the door from outside and nothing is going on in the sink.  This smell is a sewer type of odor and it isn't always as noticeable.

:working:   A couple months ago I took the drain traps apart under the sink and cleaned them really good.  It didn't help.  There is no garbage disposal on this sink.

:clueless:  My next guess is that I need to climb up on the roof and run the garden hose down the vent pipe.

Not a plumber but lots of practical experience... If there is water in the J trap under the sink then no sewer gases can come back in the house. I'm guessing that there may be a leak in the wall or under the floor that's smelling.  If you have a dishwasher near by look under it for leaks.
In the appliance business we often find the true source of an issue is not what it seems at 1st.
We had a gawd awful order that turned out to be a plastic bag of potatoes rotting.

If you have a dishwasher, it may be rotting junk inside the dishwasher drain line.

I agree with the others, its probably the disposal, the dishwasher drain line or the J is letting the smell in. The leak theory also has merit. Hope you get it figured out.

DO you have natural gas? They put an additive in natural gas that smells like rotten eggs, so it can mimic a sewer gas smell. If you have natural gas, you may want to call the gas company immediately, and tell them that you have a suspicious smell in the kitchen. Around here, they come out for free, and bring a meter that can detect the gas.

Someone may have been working on utility supply lines somewhere near your home, and gas could now be leaking in somewhere, so it may still be gas even if you dont use it. Or you could have cracked a line if you or someone else recently moved your gas range to clean around it.

Just a thought, but you cant be too careful, especially if your house can blow up.

We had that happen around here a few years ago. The gas company was working on a gas line, and they caused a leak without knowing it. The gas travelled along the conduits and leaked into the first home that it came to. The house exploded in the middle of the night, killing everyone inside.

I had a flap in my entry to my septic get clogged with papper then it started stacking up. And wade is right about that J tube in the sinks.  If these items are not working right, it will smell like very old farts

Some good ideas for me to check out.
- I do have a dishwasher that is not used very often.
- No gas leaks in the kitchen...I do have natural gas
- I cleaned the traps out 2 months ago...that didn't help.
- No dead critters in the house.
- The potatoes and onions are fresh.
- City sewers, no septic.
- My wife already calls me an old fart, so that can't be it.

But seriously, I will check all these things again and you guys gave me some good ideas to go after.  But first I have to replace the starter on my son's car.  Luckily I have a lifetime warranty on the one I put on 3 years ago from autozone.  Never a dull moment for me.  Happy 4th of July everyone.

even a city sewer home has that trap just outside the home. You find the main line out that leads to the road. Most have a cap plug outside the home for rotor rooting.  I foound the flap on one of my old homes this way. It had debri built up and stayed open a bit. Grease really does cause havok on them.   It allows paper and STUFF to build up. It happend on 2 houses on me.  I hope your troubles are easier to deal with than mine were.  I am no plumber, but fixed the problems myself.  But it sure sounds (and smells) like a faulty trap

Something that happened at my parents house, the dishwasher motor seal went bad & had a slow leak which the only outward symptom was a moldy smell especially noticeable when you first entered the house... the sub floor we discovered afterward was soaked for many feet in all directions.

Bullit has a good point about the J-trap, as it's not supposed to allow gasses to come back up from the sewer system as the water caught inthe J-trap is supposed to block off the pipe completely.  Make sure that the J-trap is installed properly and the trapped water actually seals off the pipe completely.  A leaking J-trap may cause the water to leak out and allow odor to seep through.

Hope you find the smell!
