Vacuum Leak at carb base gasket....
« on: June 27, 2009 - 04:00:49 PM »
…Murphy’s Law is too true, while getting everything buttoned up and dialed in after installing my manifold and carb I noticed a loud whistling sound coming from the carb base.  I rechecked all the fittings, lines and bolts, but it still processed.  So, I grabbed the carb cleaner and started looking for the vacuum leak, when I sprayed around the base of the carb the idle changed, found the leak.  So, I pulled the carb and checked the gasket everything good there.  I grabbed a straight edge and checked the straightness of the carburetors/manifold base and everything is straight however there is some pitting on the manifold base.

So what could be causing this leak? And more importantly how do I fix it.  I am thinking of adding another base gasket. What about a gasket sealer?

Do not glue down a carb.  Have you tried a new gasket?

Should be a thick gasket?   How many holes in the carb intake?

never, ever, ever use sealer on a carb base gasket, youll snap the ears off quicker than well, anything.

just make sure its got a clean mating surface, and try again.

It's was a thin gasket supplied by Edelbrock, with eight mounting holes and eight holes in the manifold.  I used the four inboard ones to mount the carb,  Should I use the outside ones?

The other holes may be sucking air

Is it an Edelbrock carb or a Carter AFB or AVS?  72blunblu had been having the same issue using the Edelbrock gasket with his AFB.

Edelbrock......you would think that they would supply good gaskets with thier carbs.  :swear:

Make Sure the linkage is not interfering with the manifold anywhere & lifting the carb

Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner.  Alan hit it on the head.  :2thumbs:

Someone, before me, tapped and Hilo coiled the outside holes, and drilled through into the intake.  I had to re-tap the hole and put in a new Hilo coil....no more vacuum leak.   :jumping:  :jumping:  :jumping:
